Weekly Notes Castlewellan GAC 15 June 2014 – Mixed week for the Under Age Camogs

* Our Under 12 camogs travelled to Longstone on Tuesday evening of last week. The girls put on a great display, playing some excellent camogie, coming away with a great win 6-1 to no score. Well done girls and keep up the good work.

* Last Tuesday the Under 16 camogs made the journey to An Riocht. The Town made their intentions clear – they were there to win. The team dug deep and show immense determination and grit in the first half with the score at 2-1 to 0-8 to the visitors. However, the Town ladies should have been in front by a lot more due to some poor efforts resulting in wide balls. The second half commenced with much the same skill and hard work from Castlewellan, except An Riocht, who were frightened of an upset at home, got their scoring hats on. Unfortunately for the Town they executed their scoring chances well.  The game was hard fought and sadly this extremely talented Under 16 Camogie Team were beat by 6 points. The missed opportunities cost them victory in the end. The girls faced An Riocht again in the championship on last night and with their proven ability hopefully the outcome will be more positive than last week.

* On a beautifully warm last Friday evening the Under 14 Camogs travelled to Aghaderg/ Ballyvarley. The bus chugged up to the ground to the sound of the girls “singing” one direction songs. What has this club come to? Bring back Boy Zone I realise now they weren’t that bad! Spirits were high and the mood was set for what was hoped to be a good game. From the very outset the Town girls showed they meant business – 9 wide’s in the first 5 minutes. Once they settled the scores started coming. The side showed great skill, composure and team work in what was to become a demonstration of excellent camogie. The Town keeper and backline saw very little of the ball, still maintaining their concentration when it looked like it may come their way. The back line advanced further up the field in the hope of some action their way, which enabled the ball to be passed economically around the field and preserve energy on a warm evening. The midfield and forward line excelled and made an easier job for themselves. The score finished up 0-0 to 16-7 to the Town. The scoreline reflects a team who were superb from the keeper right the way to the full forwards. Well done girls!!

* Due to the low numbers available the Under 14 Ladies Footballers were unable to fulfil their fixture with Carryduff. Training continues on Thursday on the pitch at 6.30pm sharp. Please remember your pink and black!

* The hurlers recorded a good home win on Monday night of last week against Bredagh in a high scoring game which ended 4-19 to 4-13. Both teams played some great hurling on a balmy evening which lent to magnificent game. There were some fine scores in the game particularly from Jason Croskery, Shane Smyth and Turbo Jennings all of whom were involved in the 4 goals we scored. Fionnbhar Lennon put in a top class performance in the middle of the field with Stevie Rodgers and Brendy McCann putting in stout performances at the back. The lads performances are improving and they are showing a lot of promise.
