Last Monday saw a light go out from that great generation with the passing of our Honorary Life Member Mary Rose McCartan. It would be simple to describe her as the matriarch of her family of 14 children, grandchildren/great grandchildren but to her family she was much more than that. She came from that generation that had seen hard times and simply got on with it. They had to. This scribe’s memory of her was of a woman who talked straight and also had a great sense of humour. I remember a night in the mid 1980’s nipping into a neighbour’s house and Mary Rose was there visiting her brother James. I knocked the door and walked on in. I saw her and greeted her “Hello Mary Rose how are you?” “What happened last night letting a team like Bryansford beat you?” she replied – like I said straight talking. I just said they were better than us on the night – wrong answer! I listened to her advice and learned a lesson – don’t offer any excuses! The craic with her, James, Mary Ellen and my own mother that night was enough to make TVs redundant. The Executive Committee and Members of St Malachys GAC wish to express the deepest sympathy to the McCartan Family at the passing of Mary Rose, the mother of our former Chairman and Life Member John. Mary Rose was pre-deceased by her late husband Pat, her son Barney and daughter Kathleen. We wish to express our deepest sadness and sympathy to her sons John, Life Member Edward, Eugene, Phil, Peter, Paddy, Seamus; daughters Pauline, Rosemary, Patricia, Brigid, Michelle and the entire family circle. Mary Banríon má Gael guí ar a son. Féadfaidh sí a chuid eile i síocháin.
