*“If you knew Susie like I knew Susie, Oh Oh, Oh what a girl”. Eddie Cantor sang the song originally in the 1920’s. It has to be said that Tibby Toner’s rendition was the best! There was more to Tibby (Gerard) Toner talents than just singing. For this scribe “Susie” was his signature tune and the unmistakable voice that accompanied it. In the days when entertainment was homemade, everyone who knew Tibby would know his talents with the bones or with the spoons. In days gone by in various different places around the Town, you would have seen him smile and entertain. This short piece will not do him justice. Tibby passed away peacefully last Wednesday. He was predeceased by his wife Rosaleen. The Executive Committee and Members of St Malachys GAC wish to express the deepest sympathy to the Toner Family at the passing of Tibby, We wish to express our deepest sadness and sympathy to his sons’ and life members Gerard, Frankie and Gary; to Liam, Andrew and Brian and daughter Collette. We also extend our sympathy to his brother Joseph and sisters Rosaleen, Susanna & Joan and the entire family circle. Mary Banríon má Gael guí ar a son. Féadfaidh sí a chuid eile i síocháin.

* “Reasons to be cheerful” was a hit song by Ian Dury and the Blockheads in the late 1970’s. There were plenty of reasons to be cheerful for The Town at The O’Reilly Transport Ireland sponsored Club Down All Stars 2015 Awards last Friday Night in the Canal Court Newry. Congratulations to our senior footballers Dan Morgan and Aidan Burns who deservedly picked up awards for their performances this year with The Town this year. They were nominated along with Kevin Duffin who missed out on an award. Aidan is on his travels in Australia at present so it was up to our chairman Kevin Sweeney to pick up the award on his behalf. Daniel, modest and unassuming as ever was the last of the half backs to be named. He didn’t think for a minute he would get one (we all thought he would!). The expression and smiles on his and Aine’s face were worth waiting for. The one thing you notice by all the recipients present was that not one of them had their jackets on before going up to receive their awards. No assumptions on their part and then a hasty lift of the jacket off the chair and over the shoulders and a quick button as they approached the stage. It was a great night with a question and answer session with James McCartan, Pete McGrath, Brian Mullins and Joe Kernan. One theme which permeated through the night was dedication and sacrifice that shape a Gaelic games players life. It was no different back in the 70’s the 80’s the 90’s or the noughties. Well done Daniel & Aidan and all the award recipients.
*Nursery to P7 boys and girls coaching will resume in the High School on tonight December 9th. Nursery to P4 6-7pm, P5 to P7 from 7-8pm. The final coaching session of the year will be on Tuesday December 15th at the same times. Please note the change on the last session from Wednesday to Tuesday.

*Our juvenile Christmas Disco will take place next Friday 11th December in our clubrooms from 7 – 9pm. All children from nursery to year 8 welcome. Admission is £1.50 per child.
*Best wishes to our senior player Michael Cunningham whom underwent an operation last week. We hope to see you back out on the pitch as soon as possible.
*On Friday night past we held our annual Juvenile Awards in which we celebrated both our team and individual achievements in the season just finished. Special thanks to our invited guest Irish International Hockey star Eugene Magee who played for the club at juvenile level. He will be playing for the Irish Hockey team in the upcoming Olympic Games in Brazil. We wish him and Ireland every success on the biggest stage in the world and thank him for coming along last Friday night. Thank you to our senior players who present awards to our juvenile players. Thank you to all our players and coaches from all our teams whom have given so much time and effort this season in representing our club. Thank you to Roisin Howell and Terry Cowan and the fantastic members of Comhaltas whom provided music before the awards ceremony. Thanks also to Brian Cunningham for coming along and taking photograph’s and the parents whom assisted on the night. Girls Football – Under 12 Most Improved Player of the Year – Aimee Murray, Player of the Year – Cara McKee. Under 14 Player of the Year – Megan O’Boyle. Under 16 – Most Improved Players of the year – Jade Hammond & Laoise Keaveney, Player of the Year – Emma Rice.
