*Pride and place this week goes to the County Minor Camogs who beat Laois 3-7 to 1.6 in the All Ireland semi-final on Saturday past. Particular mention must go to our club representatives on the team; Nicola McCabe, Caitriona Caldwell and Amy Barr. It is a great honour for the girls who will now feature in an All-Ireland final representing not only Down, but our club, families, club coaches and club team mates. It will be fantastic day for them all. They will play Roscommon in the final this Saturday 23rd April. The venue is not yet confirmed. Good luck girls.
*On Saturday past, the senior ladies suffered their first defeat in the league campaign to a strong Carryduff side. A game of two halves saw Carryduff take a strong lead in the first 20 minutes before the town introduced Catriona Caldwell and Nicola McCabe who made an immediate impact. Carryduff took their goals and in the end, a strong wind prevented the town girls from making any further impact in the first half. A positive second half performance saw the girls rack up 1-6 in the last 15 minutes. Their ‘never give up’ attitude will stand them in good stead going into their next game against Bredagh. A special mention to Becki, Aislinn, Nuala, Laura and Saoirse on making their senior debuts and it was also great to see Aoife Keown back in the green and black after her 10 months out with an ACL injury. Final score 5-10 to 1-09. The Ladies take on Bredagh in the Meadow this Saturday evening, throw in 7pm. Please come out and support the girls.
*The North Wind doth blow. I can’t remember the poets name but I am pretty sure he didn’t mean those words for early spring time in Castlewellan! But that’s what we got last Friday night in St Malachy’s Park windy, sleet and hailstones – poor inclement weather which paved the way for a difficult hour’s football. The visitors were Glenn who set up in a very defensive formation from the word go. That said you got to do what you got to do to try and win a game in this era. The Town dominated possession and were on the ball quite a bit, unlocking Glenn’s defence with chess like moves to create scores. A two point win in the end which the Town deserved. This was added to a win last Monday against Clonduff in Hilltown. This was a good team workmanlike performance and a difficult place to get 2 points out of. Three wins from three is a good start. This week a tough away fixture with Kilcoo who have a 100% start to the season going into press. Something has to give!
