On Saturday morning we hosted a Year 4 football blitz in St Malachy’s Park. Visiting Gaels from Bryansford, Darragh Cross, St Paul’s and Teconnaught took part in the blitz. In beautiful weather 32 of our youngest footballers enjoyed a great mornings football. The team work and skills which were displayed by the kids was great to watch – well done to all the kids. Following the blitz the visiting teams and their club coaches and supporters were given refreshments in the club. Thanks to everyone whom assisted in bringing buns and sandwiches and thanks too to those parents whom assisted in serving the refreshments in the club. A number of the visiting Gaels commented on how welcomed they felt whilst at our club – sincere thanks to everyone from all the coaches. Special thanks also to club members Joe Cunningham and Ronan Barr whom took time to referee the games.

On Sunday morning our Year 4 footballers travelled to Liatroim for a Under 12 league match. The lads following on from their great display against table toppers Kilcoo last week, came away with all the points. The boys displayed great teamwork and determination throughout. It would be impossible to name a standout player as all the boys played so well, but special mention should go to Mark McAleenan who had a super game in defence. Well done lads.

Well done to Caolam Watson whom played in Down’s win against Antrim in an Under 14 match on Sunday past

U14 Hurling – the lads were away to CPN Warrenpoint and came away with the points in a one sided encounter. This was another good team performance with long range point scoring a feature.  Next up Clonduff at home on Friday night.

The senior girls played Annaclone on Saturday night the, the first meeting since the Championship final a year ago. The town girls scored 3 points without reply in the first 5 minutes and set the marker early on. A foul on Catriona Caldwell just before half time resulted in a penalty in which Lisa Morgan slotted home. The second half was end to end, the Castlewellan defence worked tirelessly to keep the Annaclone forwards at bay with some notable performances from Emma Rice, Clare Clelland and Aisling Connelly! Castlewellans forwards took their chances with great scores in the second half from Coleen Molloy, Aoife Keown and Catherine Keown! Special mention goes to Nicola McCabe who came off the bench and made her senior debut and got herself amongst the scores and what a fine point it was too! The game ended in a draw! Final score Castlewellan 3.14 Annaclone 4.11! Best for the town: Mairead Hardy, Kelly O Higgins and Emma Rice, with the Castlewellan scorers Kelly OHiggins 0:1, Colleen Molloy 0:4, Lisa Morgan 1:4 Paula Clelland 0:1 Aoife Keown 2:2 Nicola 0:1 Catherine Keown 0:1. The girls next game is at home to Carryduff Saturday 6 June.
