In a windswept Ballygalget our u14 hurling team ended a long wait for Féile success when they overcame a hotly tipped Shamrocks team in an exciting division 2 final on Saturday. With both teams going into this final having not conceded any goals against CPN and Bredagh this had the makings of a mouth-watering duel, with the Newry lads being slight favourites having freshly crowned county skill stars champion Sean Campbell and fresh from a six point win against Ballycran in division one of the county league. Well done to all the lads from the town with help of a group of four Liatroim fontenoys who certainly played their part. This win augurs well for the future of the camán code in both clubs. Thanks to the parents who provided support and transport and to Ballygalget for their hospitality. The successful team were as follows; Míceál Mc Veigh, Tom O’Neill,Morgan Croskery, Stephen Gallagher, Ciaran Branniff, Eoin Mc Crickard(2-5), Lorcan Cairns, Joe O Boyle, Mark Owens, Callum Mc Cabe, Eoin King(0-2), Paul Flynn, Sean Barr(2 Goals), Matthew Mc Cabe (2-7), Padraig King, Eoin Cotter, Dara Rodgers(0-1), Ruairi King, Reece Hammond.
The U12 hurling team began their league on Thursday night at home to CPN. The lads hurled well after a slow start notching 6-15 in total. It was great to see some of our younger hurlers making their U12 debut. Well done boys.
Our Year 4 & Year 6 footballers began their season yesterday with blitz’s in Kilcoo and Loughinisland respectfully. The children all enjoyed their morning’s football. For many of the year 4’s it was for many their first time representing the club, and they all excelled. Thank you to all the parents whom assisted with transportation to the two locations.

Castlewellan Minors got their league campaign up and running two weeks ago at home to St Pauls in a match that didn’t go according to plan. The Town lads struggled to get going and were on the back foot for the whole of the match, eventually going down to a heavy defeat. Best for the town on the night was Keelan Burns, Ronan Barr, Conor Magorrian with Matthew Muldoon starring at the back. On Tuesday past the minor lads travelled to fierce local rivals Kilcoo for their second match of the campaign. The Town dominated the first half but where guilty of squandering some well-worked opportunities and after conceding a goal just before half time, found themselves coming in level at the break 1-2 to 0-5. After some choice words at half time the lads upped the tempo and took the game by the scruff of the neck running out easy winners 1-16 to 2-6. This was a great team performance especially in the second half where Gareth Mc Kibben and Conor Magorrian and Donagh Cairns terrorised the Kilcoo defence. At the back James Mc Aleenan and Matthew Mulldoon didn’t put a foot wrong, while mid field duo Ronan Barr and Man of Match Sean O’Boyle won all the battles and drove the team to victory.
The senior ladies footballers got back to winning ways on Saturday past, by beating local rivals Kilcoo with a scoreline of 14-11 to 0-10, well done ladies!
