* More sad news with the passing of Kevin McKenna a keen supporter of our youngest hurlers and footballers. Indeed despite ill health he attended the recent under age blitz in Kilcoo. To Mary, Kelly, Paul, Odhran, esteemed club coach Terry and juvenile members Tiernan, Shea and Conor we extend our sympathy. Ar dheis dé go raibh a anam uasal.
* After a successful Golf Classic in 2011, Castlewellan GAC return to Downpatrick Golf Club this Friday 8 June 2012 to host their Annual Golf Classic. If you wish to participate please contact Paul McArdle or Paul Hanna if you wish to book a tee time. There will also be a time sheet in Castlewellan Club. The cost of the event will be £100 per four ball, this price includes dinner in Castlewellan Club afterwards. It is good to see so many members out getting ready for the big day. Some of the preparation was reminiscent of the days when our senior footballers of old ran up and down the sand dunes at Newcastle. They were quite often on their knees afterwards not feeling the best. Our chief organiser McGiggs was seen last weekend after a round of golf in exactly the same pose. Gotta give him his dues – no pain no gain!
* The Under 8 and Under 6 hurlers headed to Portaferry on Saturday last and competed strongly against all opposition. Two under 8 teams played a total of 8 games and came out on top in most of these games taking some lovely scores in the process. Well done boys. Keep working on lifting and striking the ball. The Under 6 team came out on top in all their games proving that all the work in the hurling nursery is paying off. A big thank you to all the parents who made the journey over the water to support our youngest hurlers.
* A great win for the seconds Footballers this week with a great 5-16 to 2-12 win over our neighbours Bryansford in St Malachy’s Park. We would like to wish Darren McCauley a get well soon following an injury in an accidental collision in the game. ‘Smackers’ as he is better known hails from Armagh City so like the apples in the Orchard County he bruises easily. Get well soon Darren!
*The Under 14 Camogs beat Ballycran by four points to reach the semi-final of the Championship. This was a brilliant result for the girls who have put in so much work. They played Warrenpoint in the semi final last night.
* The Under 14 girls were beaten by neighbours Bryansford in a pulsating game. It was by the narrowest of margins in what was a great game.
* The senior footballers take on Loughinisland this weekend in the Down Senior Football Championship in Newcastle. This will be a difficult game where the Town will probably wear the favourites tag because of their division 1 status. However, as we all know divisional status means nothing in the Championship. We wish Liam, Martin, Paddy and the boys all the best this Saturday evening. One supporter gearing up for the weekend will be ‘The Weaver’. He will remember the last visit to St Patrick’s Park where walking for him was a problem. All his shoes are now marked L and R so as he can tell the difference. If you have two L’s please stop and think!
