Castlewellan Notes 17 June 2012
* Result of the week was produced by our Senior Camogie team who recorded their first win of the season against Ballygalget. It was certainly a great mix of young and shall I say the more experienced players as opposed to the term ‘older ladies’ on the team. Great displays from Aoife Keown who scored 1-03 on the night and Paidi Hawkins, Kelly-Anne McCullough and Deborah Croskery. A great display in goals from Betty Croskery and herculean efforts from Sinead McCartan and Cathy McVeigh. This was a well deserved win. A lot of effort is put in by the ladies so it is great to see them getting a result which has been long overdue. P
* Saturday was a busy day in St Malachy’s Park. In the afternoon the County Under 16 Camogie team fell at the final hurdle losing the Under 16 Ulster Final in St Malachy’s Park against Antrim. Despite a good opening 10 minutes at the start of the first half and at the end of the opening half, Down did not do themselves justice. In the end Antrim won comfortably. Our commiserations to Claire, Aoife, Anna and Ciara who were part of the Down Team. The County Primary Schools held The Allianz County Primary Schools Finals in St Malachy’s Park on Saturday morning. At those Finals Auglisnafin Girls Camogie Team fell narrowly to Ballygalget. Emma Croskery produced a fantastic display at full back while Erainn McVeigh scored a great goal to keep The Fin in touch. A long range point from Sorcha McCartan was one of the scores of the day but unfortunately it was not enough. A fantastic effort by the Auglisnafin School and the girls can be proud of all their efforts. Thanks to Brian and Frankie for all their work on Saturday. There was acknowledgment and thanks from the Down Camogie County Board and the Ulster Camogie Council for the use of St Malachy’s Park especially given the poor weather at the latter end of last week when our facilities were still available for use. The pitch thankfully stood up to the weather and all the games on it. Well done to those club members who work hard to maintain our pitches.
*Good luck to Rory Burns and Sean Dornan and the rest of the Down Minor Team on Sunday in the Ulster Minor Championship Semi-Final against Monaghan. Also to Kevin Duffin and the lads also against Monaghan in the Ulster Senior Championship Semi Final.
* Whist most of us will be in Armagh next Sunday at the Down game, the Under 16 County Camogs will start the All-Ireland series against Derry at 2.00pm in St Malachy’s Park. So if you cannot make it to Armagh, come along to the meadow and support the Camogs in their quest for All-Ireland glory.
* The Seniors Footballers recorded another win in League Division 1 at home to neighbours Kilcoo. A tight game with the Town shading it in the end. A goal from Cahal Crilly was the major score on the night with late scores Liam and Donal McKibben. This was a good result for The Town who have adapted themselves quite well in Division 1 to date.
* The Minor footballers had a great win against Mayobridge during the week running up a 3-18 to 0-05 win. A good performance all round from the lads who are starting to hit a wee bit of form at the right time of the season.
* A great performance by the Under 12 footballers on Sunday with a great display of skill and determination against a talented Kilcoo team. There was great effort and willing from both teams. A bright future for the youngsters of both clubs.
* The Under 14 Camogs ran a very talented Portaferry team close during the week. The coaches are really pleased with the efforts the girls are making and the progress to date has been immense. Roll on the championship in August for these girls.
*Good luck to Brid McCooey who heads off to the States to be a leader in the Summers Camps there. We will see you again in ‘The Fall’ all ready for action with Castlewellan once more!
